Nikon D700

written in 2019

I bought the D700 in 2018 for aproxx 450 € used. I bought it alongside with a Sigma 28-70 2,8 and a Sigma 70-200 2,8 because i photographed the wedding of a friend and i felt, that my D200 wasnt fit for the task. (low light) So i decided to buy into FX. I bought this equippment 1 Week in front of the wedding. Usually that isnt a good idea. I want to be sure about my equipment before i make a wedding, but there was no other way that time unfortunatly (i am not a professional photographer). I set the camera up full auto and everything went nice. The pictures where very well received. And i dont think that i could have done them much better with what i know now about this equipment. This little story shows how good this camera is and why it is still used by a lot of people.

what i like:
makes stunning pictures with charakter even in very bad light.

what i dont like:
back screen is too big, the thumb doesnt have as much space as on the D200 for example. a good, relaxed grip is more importat than a bigger screen.
he rubber of the grip tends to go off. this is true for every "pro" grade Nikon camera since the F100, but it can be clued back with a strong glue.
the D700 has great ergonomics, but lesser than the D200:
Here a comparision of the grip D200(left)/D700(right): i think that the D200 has an better ergonomic than the D700. this is because the D700 has to integrate a bigger screen in a more or less identical sized body. therefore the thumbbutton had to move to the right. this results in less space for the thumb. i dont like this. in my opinion a good comfortable grip is more important than a bigger screen. because in the end the bigger screen doesnt help. in order to check focus you need a strong zoom funktion anyway. checking the histogram and the color apperarance is possible with a smaller screen no problem. like on the D200.

notice, that my thumb rests more confortable on the D200. On the D700 on the other side my thumb is somewhat squeezed. Doesnt feel very comfortable.

recommendation:
this is an awesome camera even in 2019. If you dont need higher resolution or videomode, than this camera wont disapoint you.
