Sony RX 100

written in 2019

I bought this camera in 2018 new for approx 360 €.
I never was a Sony fan. And i am still no Sony fan. But this is actually a competent little camera.

What i like:
-rather big sensor and still absolutley pocketable
-very good image quality, especially for its size.
-quite well built
-really good video capabilities. the sound with the built in microphones is good too.
-is aimed at enthusiast photographers and doesnt anoy you with gimmicks.

What i dont like:
-camera is small and all the control buttons are very small. I understand that this is due to the small size, but still dont like it
-only rear LCD for framing. No optical or digital Viewfinder.
-no flash hot shoe
-front control wheel around the lens gives very sluggish feedback almost to the point that ist is hardly useable.
-macro mode only in 28 mm equiv. in the longer zoom settings the minimum focusing distance is approx 70 cm. wich isnt really close up.
-some lens flaws are corrected digital. like CA, vignetting and distortion. if i open the raw images, all the lens flaws are totally visible.
so if  you want to use a raw converter make sure you have a proper camera profile in it.
-i dont like the jpeg colors very much. my Canon G2 from 2001 renders nicer colors.

Recommendation:

If you can get it cheap it is a very capable truly pocketable camera.
would i buy it again? Probably not, i would go with a canon.
But its not that bad, that i want to sell it. i just stick with it, its good enough.
